Job summary

GAI Consultants, Inc. seeks an Intern (Transmission & Distribution) to join our Power Delivery Team in Pittsburgh, PA for a three-month summer internship.

The role supports engineers and project managers on transmission line and distribution design, with hands-on tasks across drawings, specifications, and analyses. Ideal candidates are enrolled in an accredited engineering program (civil preferred) with courses in statics and materials science, plus strong communication and computer skills.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in accredited college/university to obtain a bachelor's degree in engineering (preferably civil).
• Required classes: Statics and Material Science.
• Preferred: Structural Analysis, Soil Mechanics, Steel Design, Concrete Design.

Responsibilities

• Assist engineers/project managers with day-to-day tasks for project delivery.
• Prepare Specification Packages and Structural/Fabrication Drawings.
• Design/Analyze Transmission Lines using PLS-CADD/PLS-POLE/PLS-Tower.
• Analyze foundations and structures per codes and specs.
• Perform electrical clearance checks and calculations.
• Coordinate permits for Railroads, Roads, Environmental Crossings.
• Apply engineering principles to Power Delivery projects.

Job description

GAI is seeking an Intern (Transmission & Distribution) to join our Power Delivery Team. Required skills include critical thinking, problem solving, organization, team-focus, and eagerness to apply learned engineering principles to solve real life problems. Applicants should possess developed technical, communication, and computer skills. This position will be responsible for assisting a team of engineers and project managers with transmission line and distribution design.

This is a temporary position with a three-month duration in the summer. The successful candidate must be able to work out of the Pittsburgh, PA office.

Job Responsibilities

• Assist engineers and project managers with day-to-day project tasks as required for successful project delivery. Tasks may include:
• Preparation of Specification Packages.
• Preparation of Structural and Fabrication Drawings.
• Design and Analysis of Transmission Lines using PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-Tower.
• Design and Analysis of foundations.
• Analysis of existing and proposed structures regarding Client and other required codes, standards, and specifications.
• Performance of Electrical Clearance checks and calculations.
• Coordination and development of permits for Railroads, Roadways, and Environmental Crossings.
• Apply engineering principles to assist in the design of Power Delivery Projects.
• Demonstrate attention detail.
• Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Perform complex tasks typically following established processes.

Direction Received

• Intern will receive direction from lead engineers and project managers to complete day-to-day tasks.

Experience

• This is an entry level position and no experience required.

Education And Training

• Applicant must be enrolled at an accredited college or university to obtain a bachelor's degree in engineering, preferably civil engineering.
• Required classes: Statics and Material Science.
• Preferred classes: Structural Analysis, Soil Mechanics, Steel Design, and Concrete Design.

Communication Skills

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical reports and procedures, and governmental regulations.
• Ability to write reports and other business correspondence.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from other staff members.

Mathematical Skills

• Required mathematical skills are commensurate with the technical or engineering discipline practiced (e.g., engineering calculations, design, etc.).

Computer Skills

• Demonstrate in-depth understanding of basic computer systems and software packages. Must be willing to learn software that is specific to Power Delivery Industry.
