Job summary

GAI Consultants, Inc. seeks a Transmission Line Intern to support our Power Delivery team in Orlando, FL for a three-month summer period. The intern will assist engineers and project managers with day-to-day tasks, develop drawings, and analyze transmission lines using PLS software.

The position emphasizes attention to detail, strong communication, and applying classroom knowledge to real-life projects within a collaborative, multidisciplinary firm.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university for a bachelor’s degree in engineering (preferably civil).
• Required classes: Statics and Material Science; preferred: Structural Analysis, Soil Mechanics, Steel Design, Concrete Design.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist engineers and project managers with day-to-day project tasks for transmission line design.
• Prepare specification packages and structural/fabrication drawings.
• Design and analyze transmission lines using PLS tools; analyze foundations.
• Review existing and proposed structures for code compliance.
• Perform electrical clearance checks and calculations.
• Coordinate permits for railroads, roadways, and environmental crossings.
• Apply engineering principles to Power Delivery project designs.

Job description

GAI is seeking a Transmission Line Intern to join our Power Delivery Team. Required skills include critical thinking, problem solving, organization, team-focus, and eagerness to apply learned engineering principles to solve real life problems. Applicants should possess developed technical, communication, and computer skills. This position will be responsible for assisting a team of engineers and project managers with transmission line and distribution design.

This is a temporary position with a three-month duration in the summer. The successful candidate must be able to work out of the Orlando, FL office.

Job Responsibilities

• Assist engineers and project managers with day-to-day project tasks as required for successful project delivery. Tasks may include:
• Preparation of Specification Packages.
• Preparation of Structural and Fabrication Drawings.
• Design and Analysis of Transmission Lines using PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-Tower.
• Design and Analysis of foundations.
• Analysis of existing and proposed structures regarding Client and other required codes, standards, and specifications.
• Performance of Electrical Clearance checks and calculations.
• Coordination and development of permits for Railroads, Roadways, and Environmental Crossings.
• Apply engineering principles to assist in the design of Power Delivery Projects.
• Demonstrate attention detail.
• Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Perform complex tasks typically following established processes.

Direction Received

• Intern will receive direction from lead engineers and project managers to complete day-to-day tasks.

Experience

• This is an entry level position and no experience required.

Education And Training

• Applicant must be enrolled at an accredited college or university to obtain a bachelor's degree in engineering, preferably civil engineering.
• Required classes: Statics and Material Science.
• Preferred classes: Structural Analysis, Soil Mechanics, Steel Design, and Concrete Design.

Communication Skills

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical reports and procedures, and governmental regulations.
• Ability to write reports and other business correspondence.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from other staff members.

Mathematical Skills

• Required mathematical skills are commensurate with the technical or engineering discipline practiced (e.g., engineering calculations, design, etc.).

Computer Skills

• Demonstrate in-depth understanding of basic computer systems and software packages. Must be willing to learn software that is specific to Power Delivery Industry.
