Job summary

CCPS in Culpeper, Virginia, seeks a bilingual Spanish-English translator to support schools and families in Title I programs. You will translate and interpret communications, attend meetings, and assist with crisis interventions, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Translators will support schools in communicating with Spanish speaking families. Translators will be contacted by the administrator in charge of translation services at each school. Every translator will be trained by central office staff.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES


  • Arrange Title I parent-teacher conferences and/or make phone calls regarding educational/behavioral issues and complete necessary forms for clinic, cafeteria, report card comments, etc.;

  • Interpret during Title I meetings and render all messages accurately and to the best of his/her ability, without additions, distortions or omissions;

  • Assist with interpretation for crisis intervention involving Spanish-speaking students and parents in Title I schools;

  • Assist Title I attendance officers to set up attendance conferences and to interpret during those conferences.

  • Translate Title I case specific attendance letters and communications with parents;

  • Translate Title I documents that allow children and/or parents to go on field trips or other educational events for students and/or parents during or after the school day.

  • Interpret for Title I literacy nights, parent information nights, informational meetings, educational nights, or other meetings held at the school for parents, may require evening hours;

  • Translate Title I principal requested letters and communications welcome letter, traffic or parking information, etc.;

  • Translate Title I teacher specific letters other than those already mentioned above,

  • Translate Title I abbreviated school information that allows parents to actively participate in their children's education;

  • Maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues and parents/families;

  • Translate and interpret for the CCPS Parent Resource Center as needed; and

  • Other duties as assigned


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES


  • Fluent in reading, speaking and writing in both Spanish and English

  • May be a member of the American Translator Association (ATA)

  • Organized and capable of arranging meetings with school staff and parents

  • Able to maintain confidentiality


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


  • Have experience translating English to Spanish.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite and/or Google Team Drive

  • High School Diploma or GED


PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS

Duties performed typically in the central office and throughout the division. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 40 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities are required. Travel to schools throughout the division and central office may be required. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity and manual dexterity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Regular contact with staff members and administrators is required. Timely and regular attendance is an expectation of performance for all CCPS employees. To ensure adequate staffing, positive employee morale, and to meet expected productivity standards throughout the organization, employees will be held accountable for adhering to their workplace schedule.


EVALUATION

The supervisor will evaluate performance on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
