Job summary

Craven County Government seeks an experienced CARTS transit driver to operate a vehicle on scheduled routes, transporting passengers to medical facilities, grocery stores, and other destinations throughout the service area.

The role includes maintaining trip records, performing routine vehicle inspections, and assisting passengers including those who are elderly or disabled. A valid NC driver’s license and clean driving record are required, with background checks and drug testing as per policy.

Qualifications

• Valid North Carolina driver’s license with at least five years of driving experience.
• No points on driving record in the past three years; background check required.
• Ability to assist ambulatory passengers and wheelchair users; de-escalation when needed.

Responsibilities

• Operate CARTS agency transit vehicle on a scheduled route to transport passengers to medical facilities, grocery stores, pharmacies, and other destinations.
• Maintain records of time at stops, passengers, and mileage; ensure accuracy for payroll and reporting.
• Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections; keep vehicle clean and disinfect interior surfaces as required.
• Assist passengers getting in and out of the vehicle; secure wheelchairs and mobility devices as needed.
• Adhere to safety procedures and report any incidents; communicate via two-way radio with dispatch and supervisors.
