Job summary

Town of Blacksburg, VA seeks an intermediate semiskilled Transit Operator to drive a transit vehicle on a scheduled route, assist passengers, and provide information about transit services.

Under limited supervision, perform pre-trip inspections, collect fares, complete required paperwork, assist with ADA accessibility, and monitor vehicle condition. This is an essential position supporting community mobility and safety.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimal experience operating a public transportation vehicle and working with the public, or equivalent education/experience.
• Must be 19 years of age or older and hold a Virginia Class B CDL with Air Brakes and P endorsement.

Responsibilities

• Operates transit vehicle on an assigned route and schedule
• Performs pre-trip inspections of vehicle; reports defects and/or maintenance needs
• Attends required meetings, trainings and classes
• Completes assigned shift paperwork
• Collects fares and transfers; checks passenger IDs and passes; enters required information
• Boards and off loads passengers
• Complies with ADA requirements in assisting passengers
• Provides information concerning schedules to passenger
• Operates radio; reports unusual traffic conditions or emergencies
• Assists with training staff and new operators
• Uses a computer for work scheduling and e-mail
