Job summary

MBTA is hiring a Bus Operator to safely operate MBTA surface vehicles on assigned routes and ensure passenger safety. You will perform routine inspections, collect fares, announce destinations, and communicate with the control center in emergencies.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, a valid MA driver's license, and CDL permit with passenger endorsements, with a 40-hour work week and overtime eligibility. Training pays 100% of the full-time hourly rate.

Qualifications

• Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent (G.E.D).
• Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
• Possession of a valid driver's license for at least three (3) years.
• Possession or ability to obtain a valid Class B Massachusetts CDL permit with General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Passenger endorsements.
• A satisfactory driving record for at least three (3) years prior to hire.
• Ability to report to work on time and work entire assigned shift on a regular basis.
• A satisfactory non-renew display for tickets report from the RMV.
• Ability to pass interview & Workforce Assessment.
• Ability to pass CORI check, background screening and MBTA medical requirements.
• For applicants with prior DOT-regulated employment, ability to pass additional drug/alcohol review.
• Ability to pass DTE skill performance and road test.
• Ability to read, write, comprehend, speak English.
• Ability to communicate with customers, employees and vendors.
• Successful completion of the 120-working-day probation period.
• Satisfactory work record for the two years prior to posting closing date.

Responsibilities

• Operates surface line vehicle along assigned routes and collects fares.
• Inspects the vehicle to ensure serviceable condition.
• Announces destinations clearly at stops and points along routes.
• Notifies Control Center Dispatcher of emergencies and evacuates if needed.
• Maintains knowledge of the MBTA system to provide directions.
• Produces reports for disputes or incidents as required.
• Reports for duty on time and remains on duty for the shift.
