Job Title:Transfer Station Attendant

Location:City of Ellsworth, Maine

Department:Public Works

Reports To:Transfer Station Supervisor

Job Summary:

The City of Ellsworth is seeking a dependable and safety-conscious individual to join our Public Works Department as a Transfer Station Attendant. This role is essential in ensuring the efficient and environmentally responsible operation of our solid waste and recycling facility

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist residents and commercial users with the proper disposal and recycling of materials.
  • Operate and maintain equipment such as compactors, balers, and forklift.
  • Monitor incoming loads for prohibited or hazardous materials and ensure compliance with disposal regulations.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the facility, including snow removal and general upkeep.
  • Provide excellent customer service by answering questions and guiding users through facility procedures.
  • Collect and record fees accurately, maintaining detailed operational records.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks on equipment and report any issues promptly.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Maine driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds and working in various weather conditions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • Basic understanding of solid waste operations and recycling practices is preferred.

  • High level of integrity, reliability, and professionalism.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).

  • Basic math skills for handling cash transactions and completing records.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in completing daily logs and inspection checklists.

Work Environment:

This position requires working outdoors in all weather conditions and involves exposure to noise, dust, and odors associated with waste disposal. The role includes standing for extended periods, operating heavy machinery, and interacting with the public.

Salary:

$20.00 per hour.
