The University of Tennessee is seeking individuals to provide hourly, on-demand speech-to-text services in classrooms to ensure equal access to programs and activities. This is an hourly position on an as-needed basis. The position provides speech-to-text services in classrooms to ensure equal access to programs and activities. 36-60 hours of training, paid for by Student Disability Services, is required for this position.
Transcribers complete a Basic Skills Course that is online and paid for by Student Disability Services. Once trained, newly trained transcribers are paired with an experienced transcriber who will support them in gaining experience and comfort working as a transcriber. Transcribers provide meaning-for-meaning services in classrooms, lectures on campus, professor/student meetings, conferences, special events, and other places where dialog might occur. As they transcribe, the text is streamed wirelessly to the reader so they can see the information and participate in the discussion.
