Job summary

Norfolk Southern is seeking qualified applicants for a senior conductor role requiring availability for on-call work 24/7 and rapid response within 90 minutes. The training program lasts up to 20 weeks, with on-site instruction and field experience to achieve promotion and certification.

You’ll work on the extra board initially, bidding for regular assignments as seniority grows. The position involves traveling to assigned locations, working 2–3 days away from home weekly, and joining a union

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years or older.
• Must hold a valid driver's license and have reliable transportation.
• Ability to report to work within 90 minutes.
• Clean driving record in the past 36 months, without suspensions or related incidents.
• Must not have been involved in diversion or probation or pled guilty to related driving incidents.
• Must not have refused to undergo FRA drug/alcohol testing.
• Must pass pre-employment FRA drug and alcohol screening.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
• Experience outdoors in various weather conditions (preferred).
• Experience with heavy equipment or in physically demanding roles (preferred).
• Experience with non-traditional shifts, on call, and/or 12+ hour shifts (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Build and inspect trains, railcars, and equipment for safe operation.
• Operate remote control locomotives and perform coupling, drawbar alignment, hand brakes, and railcar riding.
• Communicate effectively with crews, dispatchers, and yard controllers.
• Maintain accurate documentation and comply with FRA and company safety regulations.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
• Review training video and pass required evaluations.
