Job summary

Norfolk Southern Corp. is seeking a Train Conductor to join our team and bid on regular assignments as seniority grows. You’ll start on the extra board, be on-call 24/7 with 90-minute notice, and spend weeks in training across locations before promotion and certification.

You must complete on-the-job training, pass exams, and join the union within 60 days. Expect extensive field work, safety focus, and long shifts with heavy equipment operation.

Qualifications

• Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
• Must pass pre-employment FRA drug and alcohol screening.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
• Must join a union within 60 days after training.
• Seniority-based; on-call 24/7 with short notice.
• Able to lift up to 85 lbs; fit for physically demanding duties.

Responsibilities

• Build and inspect trains, railcars, and equipment for safe operation.
• Operate remote control locomotives and perform coupling, drawbars, and handbrakes.
• Communicate effectively with crews, dispatchers, and yard controllers.
• Maintain accurate documentation and comply with FRA/safety regulations.
• Report to work within 90 minutes; ensure clean driving record.
• Meet FRA medical and fitness standards; pass color vision and hearing tests.
