Job summary

Natural Areas Conservancy is seeking a Community Engagement Coordinator to recruit and train advanced volunteers citywide, helping to activate and maintain trails across New York City’s five boroughs. The role blends fieldwork with community programming and requires collaboration with NYC Parks to scope volunteer projects.

The position emphasizes building a culture of engagement, leading events, and ensuring volunteers are supported through training and ongoing programming.

Qualifications

  • 1-3 years’ experience engaging volunteers
  • Experience developing and managing partnerships
  • Experience planning and executing public events
  • Experience with workplace safety practices
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and liaise with a wide range of senior stakeholders
  • Willingness to work occasional early mornings, evenings, and weekends
  • Valid New York State driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Produce scopes of work, training and support to new volunteers for trail improvement projects.
  • Collaborate with Trails Manager to identify project sites and support training on trail structures.
  • Conduct outreach to volunteers, event attendees, and community members.
  • Collaborate with NYC Parks stakeholders to scope trail projects suitable for volunteers.
  • Create and lead ongoing programming and events to engage the public in natural areas.
  • Document all volunteer projects and report on trail stewards' efforts.
  • Collaborate on training curriculum for volunteer groups and individuals.
  • Support training and supervision of volunteers as needed.
  • Implement strategies to build a culture of engagement among volunteers
