City of Bismarck is seeking a skilled technician to maintain and repair traffic signal systems and street lighting. The role requires hands-on work with electrical/electronic traffic control devices, installation of cabinets, controllers, and cameras, and coordination of utility locating tasks.

Applicants should have a high school education with specialized field training, plus 1–2 years of related experience or an apprenticeship. Valid ND driver’s license and US work authorization are required.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoots and repairs street and parking lot lights; replaces bulbs, fuses and fixtures.
  • Prepares, assembles, installs, inspects and troubleshoots traffic cabinets, traffic signal equipment and hardware.
  • Locates underground utilities as requested.
  • Installs, programs and maintains traffic signal camera systems.
  • Programs traffic signal controllers.
  • Responds to complaints from the public regarding traffic signals and street lights.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies.
  • Installs and maintains school crossing systems.
  • Tests, repairs and maintains traffic signal communication equipment.
  • Operates an aerial lift truck.

Job description

Traits required to succeed in this role: self-starter, work independently with minimum supervision, problem solver, and also to work as a member of a team. Both written and verbal communication is necessary to complete daily tasks; communication with co-workers, supervisors, and the public is a must.

This position requires a variety of specialized tasks including, but not limited to, good computer skills, configuring signal controllers, Ethernet switches, vehicle detectors, emergency vehicle detectors, setting mast arms, span wire, pedestrian poles, traffic signal equipment, troubleshooting, exposing and repairing underground faults, working in an aerial lift truck repairing whiteway and traffic signal heads and various equipment. Locating and marking City utilities with flags and paint using various locating methods such as GIS, computers, maps, and locating equipment. Work with a wide variety of electrical/electronic testing and measuring devices for the purpose of trouble shooting and repairing malfunctions in traffic control and/or white way equipment.

Typical Hours/Days: 7:00 am - 3:30pm or 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Monday - Friday. Hours and Days will vary with weather events, seasonal work, on-call schedule, and emergencies.

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. City of Bismarck does not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
  • Knowledge of traffic control system principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of the repair, maintenance and installation of electronic and electrical traffic signal equipment and fiber optics.
  • Knowledge of traffic cabinets, traffic controllers, school zone flashers, and other equipment utilized in traffic operations.
  • Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and precautions related to electrical hazards and equipment operations.
  • Knowledge of computerized communications networking principles.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
  • Skill in the development and interpretation of wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical drawings.
