Job summary

City of Bismarck is seeking a skilled technician to maintain and repair traffic signal systems and street lighting. The role requires hands-on work with electrical/electronic traffic control devices, installation of cabinets, controllers, and cameras, and coordination of utility locating tasks.

Applicants should have a high school education with specialized field training, plus 1–2 years of related experience or an apprenticeship. Valid ND driver’s license and US work authorization are required.

Qualifications

• High school education and completion of specialized training as described.
• Apprenticeship or internship experience, or 1–2 years in a similar role.
• Possession of or ability to obtain a valid ND driver’s license for the vehicle/equipment used.
• Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis; no visa sponsorship by City of Bismarck.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoots and repairs street and parking lot lights; replaces bulbs, fuses and fixtures.
• Prepares, assembles, installs, inspects and troubleshoots traffic cabinets, traffic signal equipment and hardware.
• Locates underground utilities as requested.
• Installs, programs and maintains traffic signal camera systems.
• Programs traffic signal controllers.
• Responds to complaints from the public regarding traffic signals and street lights.
• Responds to after-hours emergencies.
• Installs and maintains school crossing systems.
• Tests, repairs and maintains traffic signal communication equipment.
• Operates an aerial lift truck.
• Establishes safe work zones at work sites.
• Conducts traffic counts and observations.
• Assists in maintaining an inventory of equipment and supplies.
