Job summary

City of Bismarck is seeking a skilled Traffic Signal and Electrical Technician to install, repair, and maintain street lights, traffic cabinets, controllers, and related equipment. The role requires diagnosing electrical and electronic faults and working with GIS locating tools, cables, and fiber optics.

Typical hours are 7:00 am - 3:30 pm or 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, with on-call duties and emergency responses.

Both written and verbal communication is necessary to complete daily tasks; communication with co-workers, supervisors, and the public is a must.

This position requires a variety of specialized tasks including, but not limited to, good computer skills, configuring signal controllers, Ethernet switches, vehicle detectors, emergency vehicle detectors, setting mast arms, span wire, pedestrian poles, traffic signal equipment, troubleshooting, exposing and repairing underground faults, working in an aerial lift truck repairing whiteway and traffic signal heads and various equipment. Locating and marking City utilities with flags and paint using various locating methods such as GIS, computers, maps, and locating equipment. Work with a wide variety of electrical/electronic testing and measuring devices for the purpose of trouble shooting and repairing malfunctions in traffic control and/or white way equipment.

Typical Hours/Days: 7:00 am - 3:30pm or 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Monday - Friday. Hours and Days will vary with weather events, seasonal work, on-call schedule, and emergencies.

Examples of Duties
  • Troubleshoots and repairs street and parking lot lights; replaces bulbs, fuses and fixtures.
  • Prepares, assembles, installs, inspects and troubleshoots traffic cabinets, traffic signal equipment and hardware.
  • Locates underground utilities as requests.
  • Installs, programs and maintains traffic signal camera systems.
  • Programs traffic signal controllers.
  • Responds to complaints from the public regarding traffic signals and street lights.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies.
  • Installs and maintains school crossing systems.
  • Tests, repairs and maintains traffic signal communication equipment.
  • Operates an aerial lift truck.
  • Establishes safe work zones at work sites.
  • Conducts traffic counts and observations.
  • Assists in maintaining an inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Performs related duties.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
