Job summary

The Personnel Board of Jefferson County Alabama is seeking a Traffic Control Technician to install and repair traffic signals, intersections, streetlights, and signs, while performing preventative maintenance to prevent malfunctions.

Technicians troubleshoot signals and intersections under supervision, with duties reviewed via work orders. The role supports the Merit System across Birmingham and Homewood locations, ensuring safe traffic operation and compliance with policies.

Qualifications

• Driver's license required; must be able to acquire a Class B CDL within six months of employment.
• Coursework in AC/DC fundamentals and related electrical/electronic courses (e.g., digital electronics, troubleshooting, industrial electronics, computer hardware repair).
• Experience reading and interpreting electrical/electronic schematics and blueprints.
• Experience in electrical/electronics troubleshooting (working with voltages 120v to 480v, using a multimeter).

Responsibilities

• Performs preventative maintenance on traffic control devices to prevent malfunctions and maintain proper functioning.
• Prepares for daily activities by communicating work needed, logging activity, and documenting inventory at worksites.
• Participates in installing traffic signals, intersections, street lights, and signs; follows established procedures for safe operation.
• Troubleshoots malfunctions at signals/intersections by diagnosing causes and testing to restore proper operation.
