Job summary

The City of Birmingham is seeking a well-qualified Traffic Planning Technician to plan and conduct traffic studies in line with MUTCD guidelines. You will gather data through interviews, monitoring, and field observations to complete studies and analyze traffic patterns for better roadway flow.

You will also inspect traffic control devices and construction zones for operation, visibility, and compliance with traffic engineering plans.

Qualifications

• Driver’s license required.
• Experience applying MUTCD standards to design/construction projects while following applicable local, state, and federal guidelines.
• Experience drawing/reading technical drawings and descriptions such as maps, plans, specification sheets, field reviews to determine location, scale, dimensions.
• Experience using spreadsheets, databases, and MS Office in order to maintain documentation, create reports and maps.

Responsibilities

• Inspects the condition of roadways and traffic control devices to ensure their safe operation and compliance with MUTCD regulations.
• Communicates with coworkers, external agencies, contractors, and the public to identify and solve traffic-related problems.
• Creates and maintains records and files to ensure data is accurate and retrievable.
• Provides support to Traffic Analysts and Engineers during traffic studies by assisting with equipment setup and data collection.
