Job summary

STV Incorporated in Merrifield, VA is seeking a Traffic Engineering Intern to work with our team on transportation projects. This hybrid internship requires you to be in the office at least three days a week and supports undergraduate and graduate students for a minimum of three months.

You will assist with studies, design tasks, safety analyses, and data collection using MicroStation, AutoCAD, VISSIM, and HCS, gaining hands-on experience in traffic engineering and planning.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field at ABET‑accredited university or NCEES equivalent.
• Exposure to MicroStation and AutoCAD drafting software.
• Preference for DOT experience and familiarity with traffic operations and safety analyses.
• Familiarity with traffic signal design and roadway design elements.
• Experience with transportation data analysis or crash data analysis is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Assist with traffic engineering studies, transportation planning, and traffic design projects.
• Conduct traffic simulation and operational analyses using VISSIM, Synchro/SimTraffic, and HCS.
• Prepare and review traffic impact studies, technical reports, and analysis documentation.
• Support transportation safety analyses involving vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
• Assist with traffic signal operations, coordination, timing, and pedestrian/bicycle facility analysis.
• Develop design concepts and assist with signing, markings, and MPT plans using MicroStation and AutoCAD.
• Support multidisciplinary teams with traffic input for environmental studies and roadway design.
• Coordinate with project team members and communicate with state DOTs and local agencies.
• Assist with data collection, analysis, and preparation of proposals and business materials.
• Participate in public information meetings and project activities.
