Job description

Under general supervision, supervises professional traffic engineer work related to the design of traffic signals and signal timings, streets and roads, and the regulation and flow of traffic, performing related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  1. Prepares, reviews, and approves engineering plans for new streets, traffic signals, signal timings, and traffic control devices, either prepared by staff or consultant engineering firms. Ensures compliance with established standards, specifications, sound engineering principles, and city ordinances, making changes as needed.
  2. Assigns, monitors, and participates in investigations of traffic complaints, implementing procedures to resolve identified problems.
  3. Serves as a project engineer, supervising and participating in field surveys on arterial streets to collect data on traffic patterns, volume, speed, capacity, accidents, and parking.
  4. Analyzes survey data and recommends the installation of traffic control devices, including signals, stop signs, crossing areas, and directional arrows.
  5. Designs complex timing sequences using computer software, reviewing and approving designs prepared by staff.
  6. Oversees the monitoring of engineering contractors, ensuring work adheres to contract specifications.
  7. Coordinates traffic signal installation projects with other city departments and utilities.
  8. Consults with contractors on plan changes and contract modifications, assisting in resolving construction issues.
  9. Acts as a liaison between the department and other government agencies (e.g., Illinois Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, Chicago Transportation Authority) for project coordination.
  10. Represents the department to community groups.
  11. Prepares grant applications to secure project funding.
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Days: Monday-Friday

Hours: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, supplemented by four years of traffic engineering experience, including at least one year in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that meets the minimum degree requirement.

Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications:
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (R.P.E.) in the State of Illinois is required.
  • A valid State of Illinois driver’s license is required.
  • Must have the permanent use of an insured automobile, including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability.
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires candidates to successfully complete an interview, including a writing exercise/assessment. The candidate(s) best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, possessing the required qualifications, will be selected.
