Qualifications

  • 5+ years of traffic engineering experience with strong project management skills.
  • Ability to obtain a PE license in North Dakota and Minnesota within 6 months.
  • Proficiency in traffic analysis software and Microsoft Office.

Job Description

The location of this position is flexible and can be performed from any of our Apex offices (Fargo, Bismarck, Dickinson, ND or Detroit Lakes, St. Cloud, or Minnetonka, MN) or remotely within 250 miles of an Apex office. The candidate will be expected to attend in-person key business, client, and project-related meetings, including personnel meetings if they are a direct supervisor. This person will report directly to the Transportation Sector Leader. This position is considered a strategic hire and offers an opportunity to build a traffic team by expanding services to public and private clients.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Technical work for transportation and municipal projects involving traffic engineering and operations analysis.
  • Development of new opportunities, preparation of technical proposals, and collaboration on projects with other project managers.
Typical Tasks and Duties:
  • Lead various traffic studies and comprehensive plans.
  • Perform traffic engineering calculations, analysis, and design tasks independently.
  • Write technical specifications, reports, and correspondence for diverse audiences.
  • Lead design efforts as engineer-of-record on traffic-related projects.
  • Coordinate with technicians to assemble engineering plans.
  • Check designs of team members and mentor less experienced staff.
  • Meet deadlines, manage project budgets and schedules.
  • Participate in business development, marketing, and project pursuit activities.
  • Contribute to team meetings, seminars, and community leadership programs.
  • Assist in developing project budgets and participate in hiring processes.
  • Communicate effectively with the public during meetings and notifications.
  • Work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, following safety and company policies.
  • Travel and work overtime as needed; may assume additional responsibilities.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • PE license or ability to obtain in North Dakota and Minnesota within 6 months.
  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification.
  • 5+ years of traffic engineering and transportation planning experience.
  • Experience with projects and agencies in North Dakota and Minnesota.
  • Strong project management and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and traffic analysis software (Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, Vissim).
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil3D, MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer.
  • Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
Physical Requirements:
  • Operate a computer; occasional outdoor work and site visits.
  • Lift up to 10 pounds regularly, up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Work scheduled hours; perform duties satisfactorily with accommodations if needed.
