1872 Consulting is seeking an experienced Traffic Engineer for our Jersey City, NJ team. You will lead traffic analyses, design highways/geometrics, and support permitting across NY/NJ/Philadelphia, engaging with clients and jurisdictions to deliver multi-project outcomes.

The role requires a PE, 5–10 years of traffic/transportation experience, and familiarity with standards such as NJDOT, MUTCD, and related tools like AutoCAD Civil 3D and MicroStation. PTOE certification is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
  • PE registration required.
  • Experience preparing Traffic Impact Studies.
  • Familiarity with NJDOT and county permitting requirements and standards.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D and MicroStation.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare traffic engineering and traffic impact analyses.
  • Perform highway and geometric roadway design.
  • Support DOT access permitting.
  • Prepare signage and striping plans.
  • Conduct parking demand and feasibility studies.
  • Perform traffic signal design and construction inspection.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Traffic Engineer to join a growing engineering team in Jersey City, NJ. This role will be responsible for traffic analysis, data gathering, reporting, and design for land development and infrastructure projects throughout New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare traffic engineering and traffic impact analyses
  • Perform highway and geometric roadway design
  • Support DOT access permitting
  • Prepare signage and striping plans
  • Conduct parking demand and feasibility studies
  • Perform traffic signal design and construction inspection
  • Provide expert testimony at municipal board hearings
  • Develop and execute project objectives, timelines, goals, and budgets
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with clients and jurisdictions
  • Attend and participate in project and construction meetings
  • Assist with project pursuits, new business development, and client relationship development
  • Identify potential projects and develop strategies to grow the practice
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
  • 5–10 years of traffic/transportation engineering experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration required
  • Experience preparing Traffic Impact Studies
  • Experience with NJDOT and county permitting requirements and standards

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification
  • Knowledge and practical experience with HCS, AASHTO, MUTCD, ADA/PROWAG, NJDOT, NJTA, and related standards
  • Experience with drainage and stormwater management design
  • Knowledge of transportation-related permitting requirements and experience coordinating across engineering disciplines
  • Experience preparing Traffic Signal Plans and Electrical Plans
