Job Description
As a Traffic Control Technician, you will support and uphold AWP’s core values and mission to protect our customers’ people, businesses, and time. Your responsibilities include controlling vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic through work zones using hand signals and a STOP/SLOW paddle, reviewing and executing temporary traffic control plans, and coordinating with customers to ensure safety.
Responsibilities
- Set up, maintain, and remove advance warning signs, channelizing devices, and other traffic control devices according to Federal, State, and/or Local Temporary Traffic Control Guidelines and plans for simple and intermediate complexity work zones.
- Maintain a flagger station by standing and controlling road users with hand signals using a STOP/SLOW paddle.
- Drive a company vehicle to transport equipment, trailers, and team members to and from work sites safely and in a timely manner; may also pull lightweight trailered equipment.
- Communicate effectively with team members on the work site via radio.
- Follow all company safety procedures and practices.
- Notify the Supervisor of any potential safety issues or incidents.
- Achieve required training within the timeframe established by the Project Manager or Facility Manager.
- Provide on‑the‑job training, coaching, and mentoring to peers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Traffic Control Technician (TCT) Certification or 2000+ verifiable hours required.
- High School Diploma or GED completion required.
- Prior experience preferred in temporary traffic control services, utility industry, or construction industry.
- Excellent verbal and nonverbal communication skills.
- Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Office and customer‑relationship‑management systems.
- Must be able to follow safe workplace practices.
- Valid Driver’s License with no suspension or revocation.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Hours of operation may vary due to staffing needs.
- Frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
- Frequent exposure to extreme conditions at job sites, including high noise levels.
- Work may be performed in inclement weather, heat, cold, humidity, dust, and asphalt.
- Position may lift or carry objects up to 50 pounds.
- Required to stand for long periods and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.
- Requires good manual dexterity and multi-limb coordination.
