Qualifications

Description

The Traffic Control Coordinator will be located in Yellow Pine and is responsible for safely escorting public and authorized vehicles through active construction zones in accordance with established traffic control plans and project schedules. This position serves as a critical link between construction operations and the traveling public by managing vehicle movements, communicating roadway conditions, and ensuring the safe passage of traffic through work areas. Escorts are typically conducted on a scheduled interval, approximately every two hours, or as required by project operations.


Requirements

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Traffic Escort Operations


  • Safely escort vehicles through active construction and roadway work zones using designated pilot vehicles.

  • Conduct scheduled traffic escorts in accordance with approved traffic control plans and project requirements.

  • Manage traffic flow during restricted roadway access periods, lane closures, and construction activities.

  • Coordinate vehicle movements to minimize delays while maintaining public and workforce safety.


Communication & Coordination


  • Maintain continuous communication with construction personnel, equipment operators, and traffic control staff via radio and other communication devices.

  • Coordinate escort timing with project supervision and field operations teams.

  • Provide clear instructions and guidance to motorists regarding traffic movements and construction zone requirements.

  • Report roadway hazards, incidents, and unsafe conditions to site management.


Safety & Compliance


  • Adhere to all project safety policies, traffic control procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Perform pre-shift inspections of assigned vehicles and communication equipment.

  • Ensure pilot vehicles display required signage, lighting, and safety equipment.

  • Assist with emergency traffic management and incident response activities as directed.


Site Monitoring


  • Monitor roadway conditions and construction activities that may impact traffic movement.

  • Observe and report maintenance needs for traffic control devices, signs, barriers, and roadway surfaces.

  • Document traffic-related incidents, delays, and operational concerns as required.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications


  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

  • Minimum one (1) year of experience operating vehicles in a professional or commercial environment.

  • Ability to safely operate a vehicle in changing weather, road, and construction conditions.

  • Ability to work rotating shifts, extended hours, weekends, and holidays as required by project needs.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain any required traffic control or flagging certifications.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Previous experience in traffic control, pilot vehicle operations, transportation, construction, mining, or roadway maintenance.

  • Traffic Control Technician (TCT), Flagger Certification, or similar traffic control training.

  • Experience working in active construction or industrial environments.

  • Familiarity with traffic control plans, temporary traffic management, and work zone safety practices.

  • Experience using two-way radios and other field communication systems.
