Job summary

The Lee County Utilities Department is looking for a Tradesworker – Water Infrastructure to join our team in Fort Myers, Florida. You will perform advanced trades work on the water distribution system, install and repair water lines, meters, and hydrants, and operate a range of heavy and light equipment.

The role emphasizes safety, teamwork, and quality workmanship in maintaining essential water infrastructure.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED or equivalent.
• Six (6) months of relevant experience in public utilities or related fields.
• Ability to work independently and make sound decisions with minimal supervision.
• Must possess a Florida Class A Commercial Learner’s Permit with Tanker Endorsement before receiving a job offer
• Must obtain a Florida Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement within 90 days of hire
• DEP Level 3 Water Distribution Operator training within two years of hire

Responsibilities

• Perform complex repairs, maintenance, and installations of water distribution infrastructure.
• Install, replace, and repair water lines 1"–36" in diameter.
• Maintain and repair water valves, water meters, and fire hydrants.
• Operate mobile, heavy, and light equipment (track hoes, backhoes, loaders, Vac-Con trucks, dump trucks).
• Troubleshoot and diagnose issues within water distribution systems.
• Interpret and work from blueprints, diagrams, and technical sketches.
• Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and the public.

Job description

The Lee County Utilities Department is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Tradesworker – Water Infrastructure to join our team. This position involves advanced technical and trades work in the maintenance, repair, and installation of water distribution system components, including water lines, valves, meters, fire hydrants, and related water infrastructure.

As a Tradesworker, you will demonstrate proficiency in your trade, operate a variety of equipment, and may serve in a leadership capacity within your crew. This role offers an excellent opportunity to grow your career while supporting the critical water infrastructure that serves our community.

What You’ll Do

• Perform complex repairs, maintenance, and installations of water distribution infrastructure
• Install, replace, and repair water lines ranging from 1\"–36\" in diameter
• Maintain and repair water valves, water meters, and fire hydrants
• Operate mobile, heavy, and light equipment, including:
  • Track hoes
  • Backhoes
  • Loaders
  • Vac-Con trucks
  • Dump trucks
• Use hand and power tools specific to the water trade
• Troubleshoot and diagnose issues within water distribution systems
• Interpret and work from blueprints, diagrams, and technical sketches
• Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and the public

What We’re Looking For

• High School Diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Six (6) months of relevant experience in public utilities or related fields such as:
  • Water or sewer systems
  • Natural gas
  • Irrigation
  • Plumbing
  • Electrical
  • Telecommunications installation
• Ability to work independently and make sound decisions with minimal supervision

Licensing Requirements

• Must possess a Florida Class A Commercial Learner’s Permit with Tanker Endorsement before receiving a job offer
• Must obtain a Florida Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement within 90 days of hire

The Utilities Department will provide training, equipment, and cover all associated costs to help you obtain your CDL.

• Must complete and pass the DEP Level 3 Water Distribution Operator training course and exam within two years of hire

Safety-Sensitive Position

• This is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to Drug and Alcohol Workplace Testing in accordance with DOT regulations (49 CFR Parts 40 and/or 382)

Work Schedule

Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:30 PM
Required on-call rotation, including nights, weekends, and holidays
