Job summary

Sarasota County is seeking a Maintenance Technician to support athletic fields and facilities. The role involves light to heavy physical labor to keep parks and amenities clean, safe, and welcoming for residents and visitors. We value safety, teamwork, and responsiveness in daily park operations.

This full-time position runs Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. with starting pay of $19.51 per hour. Benefits begin within 60 days, including health, dental, and life insurance, 11 paid

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• At least 1 year of semi-skilled grounds maintenance experience.
• Valid Florida driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Perform general grounds maintenance and repairs of fields, fences, and common areas.
• Provide courteous, friendly customer service to park visitors.
• Conduct park patrols and safety inspections of athletic facilities.
• Assist with setup and cleanup for practices, games, tournaments, and events.
• Paint, mark, and maintain athletic fields according to rules.
• Report safety hazards or maintenance issues to the supervisor.
• Ensure proper watering, mowing, edging, trimming, and painting of grounds.
• Exercise initiative to ensure visitor satisfaction.

Position Summary

We are seeking a Maintenance Technician to support our Athletic Fields and Facilities. This role involves light-to-heavy physical labor to keep fields and related areas pristine for residents and visitors.

Pay starts at $19.51/hr, benefits start within 60 days, and we offer development and advancement opportunities to all county employees.

Responsibilities

• Perform general grounds maintenance, repairs, and janitorial duties of fields, fencing, common areas, amenities, parking lots, and other areas.
• Provide polite, friendly, and accurate customer service.
• Conduct park patrols and general inspections of athletic facilities to ensure the safety of the public.
• Contribute to the decision‑making process on the feasibility of playing on the field, depending upon weather and field conditions.
• Assist with set‑up and clean‑up of facilities for practices, games, tournaments, and events.
• Maintain daily upkeep of athletic fields and adjunct facilities, including painting/marking the fields, setting bases, and pitching mounds under applicable rules/specified dimensions.
• Report potential safety hazards or maintenance issues to the supervisor for follow‑up as necessary.
• Ensure proper maintenance, watering, mowing, edging, trimming, and painting and marking of athletic grounds.
• Exercise a high degree of initiative and decision‑making to ensure customer satisfaction.

Work Hours

Full‑time, 40 Hours Per Week Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma, or its equivalent.
• One (1) year of experience as a semi‑skilled laborer in the care and maintenance of parks, landscapes, athletic fields, or other similar grounds.
• Valid Florida Driver's License at time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

• Working knowledge of the maintenance of sports fields; understanding of how turf grass cultural practices affect turf performance.
• Experience in maintaining higher‑level sports field playing surfaces.

Physical Demands

Must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds.

Substance Screening

This position is subject to passing a pre‑employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.

Starting Pay

Starting pay: $19.51 (Step 1)
