Responsibilities

  • Assist with routine maintenance and repair tasks across multiple trades, including carpentry, painting, plumbing, and basic mechanical systems, under guidance of higher-level staff.
  • Provide general facilities/grounds support such as minor repairs, surface prep for painting, moving materials/equipment, pressure washing, landscaping, and debris removal.
  • Assist with furniture/fixture repairs, basic shop support, and classroom or lab setup.
  • Work independently on assigned tasks and as part of a team, following established procedures and guidelines.
  • Interact with faculty, staff, and students while responding to maintenance needs and supporting campus operations.
  • Occasionally assist with campus safety checks and essential operations during emergencies or inclement weather.
  • May drive a university vehicle and require a valid driver’s license and ability to obtain UO Driver’s Certification.

Department Summary

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is the intellectual hub of the University of Oregon, serving nearly two-thirds of all students. Founded in 1924, the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB) is the third oldest marine laboratory on the Pacific Coast. The 130-acre campus located about two hours from Eugene maintains housing, teaching, and research facilities for University of Oregon students and faculty as well as visiting investigators and students from other institutions. Resident faculty are members of the Biology department and conduct research on the development, ecology, evolution, and physiology of marine organisms worldwide from the intertidal zone to the deep sea.

Position Summary

The Trades Maintenance Worker 1 (TMW1) supports the maintenance and operation of facilities at the University of Oregon’s Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB) campus. This position assists with a variety of routine maintenance and repair tasks across multiple trades, including carpentry, painting, plumbing, and basic mechanical systems, under the guidance of higher-level staff.
The TMW1 provides general support for facilities and grounds upkeep, including assisting with minor repairs, preparing surfaces for painting, moving materials and equipment, pressure washing, landscaping, and debris removal. This position may also assist with furniture and fixture repairs, basic shop support, and classroom or lab setup.
Work is performed both independently on assigned tasks and as part of a team, with direction provided by the Facilities Manager or higher-level maintenance staff. The TMW1 follows established procedures and guidelines while developing skills across multiple trades. Daily interactions with faculty, staff, and students occur while responding to maintenance needs and supporting campus operations.
Due to the nature of the OIMB campus, work occurs in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, including exposure to inclement coastal weather and physically demanding conditions. This position may occasionally assist with campus safety checks and support essential operations during emergencies or inclement weather.
Special Requirements:
This position may drive a university vehicle and typically requires a valid driver’s license and ability to obtain UO Driver’s Certification.
