Job Description

Location: Covington, Tennessee, USA

Company Overview

Mueller Fittings Company is a premier manufacturer of high-quality industrial fittings, built on a legacy of safety, operational excellence, and manufacturing leadership. We pride ourselves on providing a dynamic, team-oriented production environment where our employees can grow their technical skills and build long-term careers. We are currently seeking a dependable Machinist to join our team.

Position Summary

A Manual Machinist is a highly skilled tradesperson responsible for setting up and operating traditional, non-computerized machine tools—such as engine lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and grinders—to fabricate, modify, or repair precision metallic and non-metallic parts. Manual machinists rely on software, deep mechanical aptitude, blueprints, and hands-on calculations to shape raw materials into exact specifications.

Core Responsibilities

  • Blueprint & Drawing Interpretation: Read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and blueprints to determine the correct methods, materials, and sequence of operations.
  • Machine Setup & Operation: Align, secure, and adjust workpieces and cutting tools on manual equipment. Calculate and set correct feeds, speeds, and depth of cuts. Fabrication: Manually turn, mill, drill, shape, and grind materials to exact dimensional tolerances (often within ± 0.001").
  • Quality Assurance & Inspection: Routinely use precision measuring instruments —including micrometers, calipers, and gauges—to inspect parts during and after the machining process.
  • Machine Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on machinery, such as cleaning, lubricating, and replacing worn cutting tools to ensure optimal performance.

Key Requirements

  • Education & Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent. Completion of a vocational technical training program, an associate degree, or a formal industry apprenticeship is highly preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Strong mechanical aptitude, deep knowledge of metalworking techniques, and proficiency in shop mathematics (geometry and trigonometry).
  • Precision & Detail: Exceptional hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and an unwavering focus on accuracy.
  • Physical Demands: Physical stamina to stand for extended periods, bend, reach, and safely lift or maneuver heavy materials (up to 50 lbs).

Qualifications & Workplace Requirements

  • Professional Standing: Must remain in good standing across all internal metrics, including safety protocols, quality guidelines, attendance standards, and company disciplinary policies.
  • Team Alignment: Proven ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced group setting, demonstrating strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Policy Compliance: Strict adherence to all established company policies, procedures, and plant safety regulations.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Physical Agility: Continuous standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and twisting on a concrete manufacturing floor throughout the shift.
  • Lifting Capacity: Ability to safely lift, push, pull, and carry a minimum of 50 pounds independently.
  • Full Benefits Package, including 401(k), STD/LTD, Life and AD&D
  • PTO, Holidays
