Duties and Responsibilities
- Analyze specifications and blueprints, lay out metal stock, set up and operate machine tools, and assemble parts to fabricate and repair metalworking dies, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges, and machinists' hand tools.
- Study specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, visualize the product to determine materials required and machines to be used.
- Calculate dimensions, plan layout, and determine assembly methods and sequence of operations.
- Measure, mark, and scribe metal stock for machining.
- Set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, and grinders, to machine parts, and verify conformance of machined parts to specifications.
- Lift machined parts, position, and secure parts on surface plates or worktables.
- Smooth flat and contoured surfaces using power grinders, and fit and assemble parts into assemblies and mechanisms.
- Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances.
- Heat treat tools or parts, and connect wiring and hydraulic lines to install electrical and hydraulic components.
- Examine standard or previously used dies, tools, jigs, and fixtures, and recommend design modifications regarding construction and function.
- Develop specifications from general descriptions for specialty tools and draw or sketch designs of products.
- Perform other duties as required or requested by management.
Qualifications
- Technical college or university program certificate; or two to four years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, and speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Reasoning ability to solve problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
