Position Highlights

  • Location: Ella T Grasso Technical High School, in Groton, CT.
  • Salary: VS01-VS02, derived from the State Vocational Federation of Teachers.
  • Academic Calendar: CTECS follows a ten-month academic calendar (188 days per year.)
Your Role as a English Instructor at Ella Grasso

A CTECS English Instructor is responsible planning and delivering effective, differentiated instruction that meets the needs of all students, including implementing IEP and 504 accommodations. Responsibilities include fostering a positive and well-managed classroom environment, engaging students through effective teaching and assessment practices, collaborating with colleagues and families, and maintaining professionalism through ongoing reflection, professional development, policy compliance, confidentiality, and student safety.

About Us

For over 100 years, CTECS has been the leading force in Career Technical Education (CTE) in the State of Connecticut. CTECS operates 17 diploma-granting technical high schools, one technical education center and two airframe mechanics and aircraft maintenance programs. The school system provides a direct employment pipeline for high school students and adult learners.

Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work)

In the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System this class is accountable for educating students in academic and trade coursework.

Examples of Duties
Responsibility Area #1: Planning and Preparation
  • Engage in intentional planning to prepare lesson plans that achieve clear objectives, use appropriate techniques, and serve the needs of all learners in the classroom through differentiation
  • Knowledge of English content and pedagogy of all high school English curricula
  • Understand the varied needs of each student
  • Work collaboratively with guidance personnel and other support service educators to assist students with special programming; ensure IEP and 504 accommodations/modifications are implemented
  • Set instructional goals and outcomes
  • Knowledge and use of varied instructional practices and resources
  • Effectively design instructional learning opportunities
  • Effectively design assessments
Responsibility Area #2: Classroom Environment
  • Develop mutual respect and rapport with students
  • Establish a culture for learning
  • Manage classroom procedures

  • Organize physical space to maximize learning opportunities

  • Follow the scope and sequence of the approved CTECS instructional program and curriculum
  • Design instruction to meet the needs of all students through both individual and small group settings as needed
  • Utilize assessments on an on-going basis to design clear and specific learning tasks
  • Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness
Responsibility Area #4: Professional Responsibilities
  • Reflect on teaching practices
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Maintain effective and on-going communication with students and their families
  • Participate in building and district level professional development and collaboration. This will include working with various committees and departments to facilitate educating students
  • Participate in professional communities
  • Demonstrate growth in professional craft
  • Demonstrate professionalism; adhere to the Connecticut Code of Professional Responsibility
  • Implement the CTECS Board of Education and administrative policies, rules, regulations, and directives
  • Maintain a positive school community image that encourages ethical student behavior
  • Maintain confidentiality concerning personnel, student, and operational concerns of the district
  • Report all cases of suspected child abuse to appropriate school personnel and authorities
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional experiences related to the field of teaching English.
  • Experience with 21st century standards-based lesson planning aligned to the CT Core Standards in English Language Arts.
  • Experience with varied assessments to inform instruction and promote learning.
  • Experience fostering and facilitating learning and classroom management.
  • Experience communicating ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Experience working effectively and collaboratively with others.
  • Experience with organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Experience in teaching or substitute teaching and be able to demonstrate varied methods of lesson delivery, assessing student knowledge, and the use of educational technology. This may include involvement in student/community activities.
Special Requirements

Incumbents must possess at time of appointment a valid certificate issued by the Connecticut State Board of Education in accordance with the Certification Regulations Concerning State Educator Certificates, Permits and Authorizations, with a secondary school endorsement.
