We are seeking an experienced Threshold Engineer / Special Inspector in Tallahassee or Panama City Beach, FL to support our growing Florida operations. This is an excellent opportunity for a Florida-licensed PE with strong structural construction experience who enjoys combining field involvement, technical leadership, project oversight, and client interaction.

Position Summary:

The Threshold Engineer will serve as a Special Inspector for Threshold Buildings, providing engineering oversight and structural inspection services in accordance with applicable Florida requirements, approved structural documents, and project-specific Special Inspection Plans.

The engineer will oversee Special Inspector Authorized Representatives (SIARs), review inspection documentation, conduct periodic site visits, coordinate with Structural Engineers of Record, contractors, owners, and building officials, and provide signed and sealed Threshold Inspection documentation.

  • Serve as the licensed Special Inspector of Threshold Buildings for assigned projects throughout Florida.
  • Review structural drawings, specifications, approved submittals, RFI responses, and Special Inspection Plans prior to and during construction.
  • Perform periodic site visits to verify structural construction is proceeding in accordance with approved construction documents and the Special Inspection Plan.
  • Provide technical oversight of Special Inspector Authorized Representatives (SIARs) performing field inspections.
  • Review the qualifications and experience of SIARs and confirm they are appropriately qualified for assigned inspection activities.
  • Review field inspection reports and documentation for accuracy, completeness, discrepancies, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Monitor identified structural discrepancies through documented resolution.
  • Prepare, review, sign and seal required Threshold Inspection reports, affidavits, letters, and final certification documentation.
  • Coordinate directly with Structural Engineers of Record regarding structural conditions, discrepancies, RFIs, and inspection requirements.
  • Participate in preconstruction meetings and project coordination meetings as needed.
  • Provide technical guidance related to reinforced concrete, post-tensioned concrete, masonry, structural steel, foundations, and other structural systems.
  • Coordinate with contractors, owners, architects, engineers, building officials, and internal NOVA project teams.
  • Assist with proposals, scopes of work, project budgeting, and client coordination for Threshold/Special Inspection services.
  • Support business development efforts and maintain strong relationships with contractors, developers, architects, structural engineers, and other clients.
  • Mentor and provide technical direction to field inspectors, engineering staff, and SIARs.
  • Maintain current knowledge of the Florida Building Code, Florida Statutes, Florida Administrative Code, and applicable inspection standards.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Current and active Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license in good standing.
  • Principal professional practice in structural engineering and/or structural field inspection of threshold buildings, consistent with Florida qualification requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience with structural construction and inspection of commercial, institutional, residential, or other large-scale building projects.
  • Strong working knowledge of structural systems including:
  • Reinforced concrete
  • Post-tensioned concrete
  • Structural masonry
  • Structural steel
  • Shallow and deep foundations
  • Precast construction
  • Working knowledge of the Florida Building Code and applicable threshold/special inspection requirements.
  • Ability to interpret structural drawings, specifications, shop drawings, RFIs, and inspection plans.
  • Strong technical writing, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively oversee and provide technical direction to inspection personnel.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 8+ years of structural engineering, construction inspection, or related engineering experience.
  • Current Florida Special Inspector (SI) of Threshold Buildings certification through the Florida Board of Professional Engineers is highly preferred.
  • Previous experience serving as the Special Inspector of record for Florida Threshold Building projects.
  • Experience supervising or qualifying SIARs.
  • Experience with high-rise, multifamily, hospitality, healthcare, institutional, parking structure, and large commercial construction.
  • Experience with Construction Materials Testing (CMT) and Special Inspection programs.
  • Certifications from organizations such as ACI, ICC, PTI, and/or AISC related to concrete, masonry, post-tensioning, or structural steel inspection.
  • Existing relationships with Florida contractors, developers, architects, structural engineers, or municipalities.
  • Experience preparing proposals, managing engineering projects, and developing client relationships.
