Job summary

Massachusetts Maritime Academy is seeking a 3rd Mate to serve as an officer of the watch, train cadets, and oversee shipboard safety and maintenance on the training ship. You will report to the Chief Mate and ensure compliance with STCW endorsements and USCG requirements.

The role requires USCG credentials, TWIC, a valid passport, and a willingness to teach cadets in a dynamic, pressure-filled environment during sea-term operations.

Qualifications

• MMC Third Mate – Unlimited tonnage, Oceans with all STCW endorsements.
• TWIC and US passport required.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Prior teaching experience preferred.
• USCG medical certificate required.

Responsibilities

• Perform duties of a 3rd Mate and act as Ship's Safety Officer.
• Oversee inventory, maintenance and repair of safety equipment.
• Train cadets in deck operations and safety practices.
• Supervise deck tools and spaces; maintain orderliness.
• Assist with pilot transfers, anchoring, mooring, and cargo ops.
• Stand watches as licensed deck officer, in port or underway.
• Participate in ship deployments and uniform compliance.
