Job summary

Massachusetts Maritime Academy is seeking a Navigation Officer to serve as the primary officer responsible for vessel movement, port planning, and safe navigation. You will supervise deck operations and cadet instruction, ensuring all bridge watches meet standard navigation procedures and ship's log maintenance.

Applicants must hold a USCG Second Mate Oceans Unlimited license with STCW endorsements and possess at least two years of sea experience on ships of a similar size.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a recognized discipline.
  • Valid USCG License as Second Mate Oceans Unlimited with STCW endorsements.
  • Two years sea experience as Second Mate on vessels of appropriate size or larger.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with maintenance management systems.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary Navigation Officer onboard, including vessel movement, message traffic, maneuvering and port planning.
  • Support safety management system maintenance and reporting.
  • Supervise deck operations and assist with pilotage, navigation and safety of the vessel.
  • Ensure watches complete standard navigation day work, including logs and weather records.
  • Utilize shipboard navigation software including ECDIS and GMDSS.
