Job summary

Hexcel is seeking a Thermoplastics Lead Engineer for our Amesbury, MA location. You will lead design and qualification of thermoplastic tooling for extrusion and injection molding, while guiding process improvements and capital projects.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years in extrusion or twin-screw compounding, strong CAD skills (SolidWorks/Solid Edge), experience with mold flow, DFM, Lean and Six Sigma, and the ability to obtain a DOD security clearance. Competitive benefits available.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Plastics, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering or related field.
• 5+ years of profile extrusion or twin-screw compounding experience preferred.
• Proficient in SolidWorks and Solid Edge design software.
• Strong tooling design, mold flow analysis and DFM background.
• Knowledge of scale-up, process optimization and SPC/Six Sigma.
• Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications.
• Experience with Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma; Black Belt is a plus.
• Ability to manage capital projects and cost modeling.
• Experience with BOMs and manufacturing routes.
• Must obtain DOD security clearance; ability to lift 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

• Design and prove out of thermoplastic tooling (Extrusion, Injection Molding, etc.)
• Operate and troubleshoot single/twin screw extruders and injection molders; assist in repairs/upgrades
• Assist operators with process improvements
• Specify new equipment; develop procedures and troubleshoot as needed
• Perform lab-scale and pilot-level compounding of new polymer/filler systems
• Serve as SME for Thermoplastic Engineering projects
• Provide technical direction and development opportunities for direct/indirect reports
• Act as bridge between engineering/technical team and department leaders for integration
• Drive new development opportunities with Operations and Engineering to win new business
• Participate in customer meetings to capture requirements and support NPI activities
