Job summary

Los Alamos National Security LLC is seeking a Research and Development Engineer to support the metallurgy of manufacturing in a science-based prototype environment. You will coordinate fabrication activities, implement innovative solutions, and contribute to hands-on metal forming and testing.

The role requires a Bachelor's in Engineering and 4+ years of related experience, plus the ability to obtain a Q clearance.

Qualifications

• Formal training or hands-on experience in metal fabrication processes (forging, drawing, rolling, heat treating, mechanical testing).
• Understanding of microstructural development during metals manufacturing and heat-treating methods.
• Experience assisting or contributing to R&D projects.
• Proficiency in Microsoft applications and computational engineering analysis.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with colleagues and customers.
• Experience presenting research results in technical summaries or reports.
• Ability to lead and manage an R&D project independently or with a small team.
• Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship.

Responsibilities

• Assist with metals manufacturing research and development activities.
• Perform hands-on metals processing work.
• Design and fabricate experimental metal components with cross-disciplinary teams.
• Advance new fabrication concepts for engineering alloys for production environments.
• Author and contribute to technical papers for peer-reviewed journals.
• Interface between engineering and manufacturing to meet objectives.
• Mentor junior staff and peers in technical growth.
• Participate in professional societies or external groups as needed.
• Provide peer review across organizations.
