Job description

What You Will Do

This position is open for external candidates only to apply.

The Thermomechanical Processing Science Team is seeking a Research and Development Engineer to join the Team to assist research projects investigating the metallurgy of manufacturing. The Thermomechanical Processing Science Team works on metal forming and heat-treating projects using equipment such as hydraulic presses, rolling mills, and vacuum heat-treating furnaces. We support a wide variety of programs with an emphasis on identifying creative solutions to meet our customer's needs. The successful candidate will be able to work effectively on both independent projects or as part of a team to assist on projects in a science-based prototype manufacturing environment. In general, you will be expected to fulfill the normal roles of a product or process engineer. Your work will span coordinating fabrication activities for one-off experiments, implementing novel manufacturing solutions for complex parts, and helping with hands-on work in metal forming.

R&D Engineer 2

The successful candidate will:

  • Assist with a variety of metals manufacturing research and development activities.
  • Perform hands-on metals processing work.
  • Work within integrated and cross-disciplinary teams to design and fabricate experimental metal components aligned with customer needs.
  • Advance new fabrication concepts for engineering alloys for incorporation in production environments.
  • Author and contribute to technical papers for publishing in peer-reviewed technical journals.
  • Serve as a primary interface between the engineering and manufacturing functions to ensure production and research objectives are met
  • Develop mentoring skills to mentor junior staff and peers in technical and professional growth
  • Actively participates in professional societies, complex interactions, special assignments, and/or external special interest groups. May participate in external working groups and/or assist in organizing meetings and colloquia.
  • Provides peer review of the work of others across organizations or disciplines.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Formal training or hands-on experience in any of the following specific processes: forging, drawing, rolling, heat treating, mechanical testing, and/or other metal fabrication using manual or computer numerically controlled equipment
  • Understanding of microstructural development during metals manufacturing and heat-treating methods.
  • Experience assisting or contributing to R&D projects
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications and computer operations and computational engineering analysis.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with colleagues and customers.
  • Experience presenting research results in technical summaries or reports and/or presenting technical results
  • Ability to lead and manage an R&D project independently or with a small team.
  • Ability to obtain a "Q" clearance, which normally requires US citizenship.
