Job summary

Blue Origin in Seattle, WA is seeking a thermal design engineer to lead the modeling and analysis of engine components from concept through fabrication and service. The role requires hands-on experience with thermal design, FEA, and scripting to improve thermal performance and reliability.

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, perform optimization studies for cooling and lubrication, and document analyses to support engineering drawings and testing plans.

Qualifications

• B.S. degree in engineering and 5+ years of experience.
• Proficiency with ANSYS Workbench or Thermal Desktop.
• Experience with flow network modeling software (Flownex, Sinda/Fluint).
• Knowledgeable in determining appropriate scope of thermal modeling (Lumped capacitance, 1-D thermal network, 2-D and 3-D simulations).
• Solid understanding of heat transfer, flow, and thermodynamic first principles.
• Knowledge of engineering materials and their applications to achieve optimal thermal design outcomes.
• Demonstrated experience using scripting languages (VBA, Matlab, Python, FORTRAN, etc.).

Responsibilities

• Lead thermal design and analysis of rotating and static components/assemblies from concept through fabrication, testing, validation and into service.
• Define engine and component cooling requirements through optimization studies.
• Perform hand calculations and FE analyses to evaluate thermal state and heat rejection.
• Collaborate with team members to optimize design performance and durability.
• Document thermal analysis to support release of drawings and documents.
• Develop process automation tools for model creation and balance checks.
• Support test plan development to verify requirements and generate data.
