About Duke Regional Hospital

With 388 beds, it is the second largest of Duke Health's four hospitals and offers a comprehensive range of medical, surgical, and diagnostic services, including orthopedics, weight-loss surgery, women's services, and heart and vascular services.

General Description of the Job Class

Perform moderately skilled work aiding physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech language pathologists (if applicable) with departmental operating procedures and patient treatment.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Level I
  • Perform patient-related tasks and instruction, in which employee has attained competence, as specifically designated by the therapist. Prepare patient and treatment area for care, aid therapist with patient care under direct and/or indirect supervision.
  • Meet all competency skills for Therapy Aide Level I.
  • Utilize correct sterile technique when assisting with wound care and dressing changes.
  • Transport patients to proper location according to the daily schedule, utilizing all necessary safety precautions in all hospital areas as requested.
  • Transport, transfer, and/or assist patients in and out of wheelchairs, beds, tilt tables, or stretchers safely and comfortably.
  • Assist in scheduling inpatients and outpatients as needed and ensure timely patient arrivals for scheduled visits.
  • Assist patients with transfers, dressing, and toileting as necessary.
  • Maintain, care for, and clean equipment and supplies.
  • Follow good body mechanics and oxygen procedures during patient transport.
  • Transport/deliver equipment, records, mail/messages as requested or according to schedule.
  • Manage or assist with linen and supply inventory, organize and stock efficiently, check levels daily, and process orders accurately.
  • Meet patient care productivity standards and contribute to team productivity and cross coverage efforts.
  • Report patient responses to treatment, complete logs, and assist with administrative tasks like posting charges and front office coverage.
  • Communicate courteously and respectfully with patients and staff, respond promptly to requests, and assist with volunteer orientation and training.
  • Participate in process reviews and regulatory compliance.
Level II

In addition to Level I duties, performs more complex tasks, including co-treating with supervision, managing supply orders, checking equipment, providing on-site supervision to aides, and organizing workload fairly.

Required Qualifications
Education:Level I: High school diploma or GED; Level II: Bachelor's in Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, or related certification/experience.
Experience:Level I: Successful completion of on-the-job training; 1-year rehabilitative services experience preferred. Level II: Same as education requirements, with at least three years relevant experience.
Licensure/Certification:Both levels require BCLS certification or obtaining it within three months of employment.
