Summary: The Unconventional (TU) is seeking a qualified Interpreter to support the Department of Justice (DOJ) with Translation, Interpretation, Transcription, and other Linguistic Support Services (LSS). Activities include translating documents (written/electronic), video/audio media (e.g., CDs, .wav files), and providing ancillary services such as court and deposition interpretation. Source material involves legal, business, administrative, medical, scientific, financial, historical, geographical, and military terminology, including technology-related concepts in sciences (chemical, physical, cyber). The specialized terminology often varies significantly from everyday language in the target and source languages.
The materials to be translated, transcribed, or interpreted are legal in nature and may be provided in various formats, including electronic or hard copies, multimedia, spreadsheets, emails, SMS/MMS messages, and audio/video files. The content can range from highly technical to informal street language and textspeak. Examples include medical reports, chemical lab reports, financial documents, legal warrants, treaties, court decisions, law enforcement communications, and sensitive information requiring strict confidentiality.
**Requirements:**
- Provide interpretation services within 3 hours of request.
- Specialized training and/or extensive experience in court or legal environments in the required language.
- Minimum of 4 years of interpretation experience in the required mode.
- ILR 3 or equivalent score on language/translation tests.
- Lived in the U.S. for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
- At least 1 year of experience with law enforcement or legal departments.
- U.S. citizenship.
- Fluency in English and the foreign language, including colloquialisms and regionalisms.
- Knowledge of specialized legal and governmental vocabulary.
- Ability to interpret accurately, preserving tone and register.
- Compliance with linguist ethics.
- Proficiency with SDL Trados Studio or similar CAT tools.
**Security Clearance:** Active Public Trust or higher.
