Job summary

EMC Insurance Companies is seeking an underwriter trainee located in Texas to shadow experienced underwriters and learn risk appetite for middle market accounts. You will consult with senior underwriters, review endorsements, and assist in evaluating accounts within limited authority.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in insurance or business administration, or equivalent experience.
• Insurance designations such as AINS, AU, CIC or CPCU preferred.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

Responsibilities

• Shadow experienced underwriters to learn company and regional middle market risk appetite and gain experience in developing agency relationships.
• Consults experienced underwriters to ask questions and gain understanding in underwriting best practices.
• Supports underwriting team by completing tasks, such as reviewing endorsements within authority limit and analyzing assigned new and renewal accounts.
• Under supervision, evaluates basic middle market accounts for risk selection and pricing purposes within limited authority.
• Analyzes exposure, company and regional risk appetite, account premium and loss history, financial data, line(s) of business, price guidance, motor vehicle records, online sources of information, reports from premium audit or risk improvement and other relevant information to underwrite policies.
• Maintains proper file documentation in connection with accounts.
• Communicates with agents and provides updates on accounts.
• Collaborates with marketing representatives to learn about building relationships and providing agents with good customer experiences, responsiveness, and ensuring they select EMC as their insurer of choice.
• Attends peer training sessions, corporate workshops, and learning courses to enhance underwriting knowledge and skills.
