Job summary

WSP is seeking a Transportation Engineering Technician V/ Construction Inspector to join our Construction Management team in Columbia, MD. The role focuses on inspecting road, bridge, and related projects for the SHA, ensuring compliance with approved plans and field testing of materials.

The candidate will work in various weather conditions, communicate field changes, and collaborate with utilities and agencies. MDOT/SHA familiarity and MARTCP/OSHA certifications are preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 5 years of experience in roadway and bridge construction and related inspection.
  • Experience with MDOT/SHA/MDTA is desirable and preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily site inspections of contractors’ work on highway, bridge, and related construction projects, ensuring compliance with plans and specs.
  • Conduct field tests on construction materials (slump, air content, compaction).
  • Measure and record material placement for contractor payments.

Job description

WSP is seeking a Transportation Engineering Technician (TET) V/ Construction Inspector to join our Construction Management team out of our Columbia, MD office.

Job Description

The desired candidate will serve as a Construction Inspector to support our Construction Management and Inspection (CMI) services related to Road and Bridge Projects for the State Highway Administration (SHA).

Roles And Responsibilities
  • Provide daily site inspections of contractors’ work on highway, bridge, structural steel repairs, welding, painting, electrical, environmental or other complex construction projects to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications and maintain up-to-date project records.
  • Conduct routine field tests on construction materials such as slump test, air content test, and compaction tests.
  • Measure and record material placed for periodic contractor payments.
  • Prepare daily inspection reports and/or logs that describe number of employees on a job site, amount of work performed, and materials used, weather conditions, accidents on the job site and equipment use.
  • Work in various weather conditions and terrains and will be available nights and weekends as needed.
  • Work effectively with others.
  • Understand and follow instructions.
  • Measure and record pay items.
  • Communicate conditions and field conflicts/changes to Owner.
  • Work closely with others team members, along with personnel from utilities, state, local, and federal agencies.
  • Demonstrate independent and effective problem solving/decision making.
Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma
  • 5 years of experience in Roadway and Bridge construction.
  • Prior experience with Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), State Highway Administration (SHA) and/or Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) is desired.
  • Experience in field inspection, or construction supervision of civil works projects (earthwork, roads, utilities, infrastructure, bridges, paving, drainage, etc.).
  • Must possess knowledge and experience in American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Concrete Institute (ACI), and other miscellaneous construction testing requirements, as well as knowledge in construction inspection procedures, and inspections methodologies, including the use of nuclear gauges, concrete sampling, and construction safety.
  • Mid-Atlantic Region Technician Certification Program (MARTCP) Certifications, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10 and Erosion and Sediment (E&S) Certifications preferred.
  • Dependable transportation is required.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Must be fluent in both written and spoken English.

Compensation

Expected Salary: $31 - $41/hr

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location.
