Job summary

WSP is seeking a Transportation Engineering Technician III to join our Construction Management team in Columbia, MD. The role supports inspection services on road/bridge projects and requires daily site inspections, field testing, and daily reporting.

The candidate will participate in a growing organization, work with a multi-agency team, and be available for varied schedules including nights and weekends as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma.
  • 3 years of experience in field inspection or construction supervision of civil works projects (earthwork, roads, utilities, infrastructure, bridges, paving, drainage, etc.).
  • Knowledge of ASTM, ACI, and other construction testing requirements; inspections methodologies including nuclear gauges, concrete sampling, and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily site inspections of contractors’ work on highway, bridge, structural steel repairs, welding, painting, electrical, environmental or other complex construction projects to ensure compliance with approved plans and specs.
  • Conduct routine field tests on construction materials such as slump test, air content test, and compaction tests.
  • Measure and record material placed for periodic contractor payments.
  • Prepare daily inspection reports and logs describing workers, work performed, materials used, weather conditions, accidents, and equipment usage.
  • Work in various weather conditions, capable of nights and weekends as needed.
  • Communicate conditions and field conflicts/changes to Owner.
  • Collaborate with teams and agencies from utilities, state, local, and federal levels.

This Opportunity

WSP is seeking a Transportation Engineering Technician (TET) III to join our Construction Management team in Columbia, MD office. This position will serve projects in the broader Eastern Shore region of Maryland.

The desired candidate will serve as a Construction Inspector to support our Construction Management and Inspection (CMI) services related to Road and Bridge Projects.

Your Impact

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily site inspections of contractors’ work on highway, bridge, structural steel repairs, welding, painting, electrical, environmental or other complex construction projects to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications and maintain up-to-date project records.
  • Conduct routine field tests on construction materials such as slump test, air content test, and compaction tests.
  • Measure and record material placed for periodic contractor payments.
  • Prepare daily inspection reports and/or logs that describe number of employees on a job site, amount of work performed, and materials used, weather conditions, accidents on the job site and equipment use.
  • Work in various weather conditions and terrains and will be available nights and weekends as needed.
  • Work effectively with others.
  • Understand and follow instructions.
  • Measure and record pay items.
  • Communicate conditions and field conflicts/changes to Owner.
  • Work closely with others team members, along with personnel from utilities, state, local, and federal agencies.
  • Demonstrate independent and effective problem solving/decision making.
Who You Are

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • 3 years of experience in field inspection, or construction supervision of civil works projects (earthwork, roads, utilities, infrastructure, bridges, paving, drainage, etc.) on Roadway and Bridge construction projects.
  • Must possess knowledge and experience in American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Concrete Institute (ACI), and other miscellaneous construction testing requirements, as well as knowledge in construction inspection procedures, and inspections methodologies, including the use of nuclear gauges, concrete sampling, and construction safety.
  • Mid-Atlantic Region Technician Certification Program (MARTCP) Certifications, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10 and Erosion and Sediment (E&S) Certifications preferred.
  • Prior experience with Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) State Highway Administration (SHA) is desired.
  • Dependable transportation is required.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass a background test.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Must be fluent in both written and spoken English.

Compensation:

Expected Salary: $55,900 - 69,900

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law
