Job summary

Peraton is seeking a Senior Test Engineer for the Health and Financial Solutions team to support the testing lifecycle for Medicare claims processing systems on a legacy mainframe platform.   • Proficiency in mainframe environments, including JCL, COBOL (reading and debugging), DB2 SQL queries, and VSAM file handling.
  • Experience with test case management and orchestration tools including Quick Test Pro, Open Text UFT, and TestRail.
  • Familiarity with Medicare claims processing, including 837/835 EDI transactions and CMS requirements.
  • Experience using Jira or equivalent defect tracking tools to manage defects and testing workflow.
  • Strong Agile/Hybrid testing methodologies and ability to adapt test strategies.

Responsibilities

The Health and Financial Solutions team is looking for a Test Engineer to support the testing lifecycle for Medicare claims processing systems operating on a legacy mainframe platform. This role requires expertise in validating Durable Medical Equipment (DME) claim workflows, ensuring compliance with CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) regulations, and managing test cases within TestRail. The engineer will collaborate with business analysts, developers, and operations to design, execute, and automate test suites for both functional and regression testing.

Key Responsibilities

Design, implement, and maintain automated test scripts for critical Medicare claim workflows in the mainframe environment (batch and online).

  • Integrate automated test suites with TestRail for execution tracking and reporting.
  • Continuously assess regression suites for automation opportunities to improve test coverage, speed, and repeatability.
  • Develop, manage, and execute test cases within TestRail aligned to Medicare claims workflows and CMS requirements.
  • Perform functional, regression, and integration testing for mainframe batch and online applications.
  • Validate COBOL/JCL jobs, DB2/VSAM database updates, and downstream claim adjudication outputs.

Qualifications
Required Skills & Experience
  • 2 years with BS/BA, 6 years no degree.
  • Proficiency in mainframe environments, including JCL, COBOL (reading and debugging), DB2 SQL queries, and VSAM file handling.
  • Proven experience with test case management and orchestration tools including Quick Test Pro, Open Text Unified Functional Testing (UFT), and TestRail, to design, execute maintain automated test cases.
  • Familiarity with Medicare claims processing, including 837/835 EDI transactions, claim adjudication logic, and CMS compliance requirements.
  • Experience using defect tracking tools such as Jira, or equivalent platforms to manage defects and testing workflow.
  • Solid understanding of Agile and Hybrid Agile/Waterfall testing methodologies, with the ability to adapt test strategies to evolving delivery models.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze business and system requirements, translating them into detailed and reusable test cases and automation scripts.
  • Strong attention to detail, with disciplined documentation practices to support audit and regulatory compliance standards.
  • US Citizen and have the ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks for mainframe (e.g., CA Verify, Compuware Test Automation, REXX scripting).
  • Knowledge of CMS regulatory changes (e.g., ICD-10, HIPAA, DMEPOS).
  • Prior experience in healthcare payer systems or CMS audit environments.
  • Familiarity with DevOps pipelines and CI/CD integration with test management software.

Target Salary Range

$86,000 - $138,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual's experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
