Job summary

IMTT in Geismar, LA is seeking a Tank Farm Terminal Operator to safely load and unload tank trucks, rail cars, barges, and ships. You will learn to operate terminal equipment and perform daily transfers with accuracy and safety.

The role requires knowledge of flow meters and gauging systems, readiness to work around hazardous materials, and flexibility to rotate 12-hour shifts, including nights and weekends in a 24/7 operation.

Qualifications

• HD diploma or equivalent and field operations experience.
• TWIC credential and valid driver’s license.
• Strong written and verbal English communications.
• Ability to operate terminal equipment safely and accurately.
• Familiarity with safety procedures and emergency response.

Responsibilities

• Control and monitor transfers of bulk liquids between lines, vessels, barges, rail cars and trucks.
• Physically connect transfer lines and validate proper quantities using meters and gauges.
• Understand load orders and confirm quantities before transfers.
• Generate transfer and shipping documents as required.
• Verify tank gauging with tape gauges and volume calculations.
• Open/close valves, start/stop transfer pumps, monitor heating systems.
• Pig transfer lines to clear residues and ensure clean lines.
• Perform first-level mechanical maintenance on pumps, valves and loading arms.
• Respond to terminal emergencies such as spills and fires.

Job description

The Tank Farm Terminal Operator is responsible for safe and efficient loading and unloading of tank trucks, rail cars, barges, and ships with a variety of specialty chemicals. This position will be required to learn and safely operate terminal equipment and perform daily operating functions in conjunction with the loading and unloading activities.ResponsibilitiesControl and monitor transfers of the various bulk liquid fine chemicals stored and handled at the facility. Physically establish connections between the facility’s transfer lines, vessels, barges, rail cars and trucks.Understand printed load orders and confirm that the proper quantities are transferred by utilizing flow meters, batch controllers, tank gauging systems, etc. Assist in generating the proper transfer documentation and shipping documents.When necessary, verify automated tank gauging systems with tape gauges and volume calculations.Open and close motor operated and manual valves. Activate and monitor product transfer pumps. Monitor tank and line heating systems.Empty transfer lines by means of “pigging”.Perform first level mechanical maintenance on pumps, valves, filters, loading arms, etc.Assist in responding to terminal emergencies such as spills and fire.Education and ExperienceHigh School Diploma or equivalentExperience in field operations, preferably in the chemical or Petro-Chemical industry.Professional safety training and/or experience in industrial firefighting.Valid Driver’s LicenseTWIC (Transportation Workers Identification Credentials) for access to IMTT’s terminal locations.Skills and AbilitiesClear and concise written and verbal communication skills in the English language.Ability to understand written and verbal communication in the English language.Ability to make decisions in a variable environment.Knowledge of basic mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions).Capable of participating in the terminal emergency response organizationProficient in the use of computer automated control and monitoring systems.Hours of WorkTypical hours of operation are Sunday through Saturday with rotating twelve-hour shifts.This is a non-exempt, hourly position. Employees are scheduled to work assigned shifts within a 24/7 operation, including nights, weekends, and holidays. All hours worked must be accurately recorded, and overtime is paid in accordance with FLSA and company policy.Occasional travel may be necessary, sometimes with little or no advance notice.Physical and Environmental DemandThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
