Job summary

The City of Seattle is seeking a Term Limited Temporary Instructional Designer to design and develop innovative eLearning solutions for supervisor, leadership, performance management, and onboarding programs. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or related field (or equivalent combination).
  • Three years' experience with full development cycle of e-learning projects.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills for outlines and course materials.
  • Proficiency with ARTICULATE STORYLINE, Illustrator, MS Office, and Cornerstone LMS.
  • Experience with AGILE methodologies and safety-related training development.

Responsibilities

  • Design educational content following instructional design principles and align objectives with business goals.
  • Collaborate with SMEs and cross-functional teams to develop curricula for live classrooms, workshops, and e-learning.
  • Develop interactive online learning experiences using advanced eLearning tools.
  • Ensure content structure, clarity, and writing quality for seamless collaboration with eLearning developers.
  • Assess training effectiveness and iterate for measurable outcomes.
  • Create content that adheres to brand guidelines and style guides.
  • Streamline eLearning production and shorten development times while maintaining quality.
  • Coordinate with product experts, program managers, and technicians to align content with priorities.
  • Lead planning sessions and translate input from leaders into instructional strategies.

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU)is seeking aTerm Limited Temporary (TLT) Instructional Designer (SA1, Utils L21) to design and develop innovative eLearning solutions for supervisor, leadership, performance management, professional skills, organizational policies & procedures and onboarding programs. The instructional designer's role is to understand how people learn and use that knowledge to create eLearning solutions that facilitate learning and behavior change using online authoring tools. Candidate will be a team player, adaptable and able to switch gears easily, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects at once. The position reports to the Manager of Learning and Development.

This temporary opportunity is fully benefited and expected to lastup to 35 months.This position is open to all qualified candidates.

Primary responsibilities for TLT Instructional Designer:

  • Design educational content adhering to instructional design principles, ensuring learning objectives align with business objectives.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to co-create dynamic curricula for live classrooms, workshops, and e-learning experiences, utilizing AGILE methodologies for continuous improvement and flexibility.
  • Develop interactive and immersive online learning experiences using advanced eLearning authoring tools.
  • Focus on content structure, clarity, and effective writing to collaborate seamlessly with eLearning developers.
  • Regularly assess training solutions for quality, scalability, and impact on learner behavior and business objectives, implementing iterative improvements to drive measurable outcomes.
  • Create content that adheres to brand guidelines and style guides.
  • Work with evolving templates and tools and look for ways to streamline eLearning production and shorten development times while maintaining quality and impact.
  • Collaborate closely with technical cross-functional stakeholders, including product technical experts, service leaders, program managers, and technicians, to align training content with strategic priorities.
  • Facilitate planning sessions and synthesize input from multiple leaders into clear, actionable instructional strategies.

Experience: Three (3) years' experience providing full development cycle of e-learning projects from analysis to implementation.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Education or related field. (If no degree, two (2) additional years of qualifying experience are required)

Combinations of appropriate education, training, certification, and experience(s) will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing (both creation and editing) skills to produce content outlines and course materials.
  • Proficiencywith Adobe Illustrator (for development of graphic elements used in e-learning collaterals), Articulate Storyline, and Microsoft Office (emphasizing Word and PowerPoint, with some Excel familiarity).
  • Experience with Cornerstone Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Experience with AGILE methodologies.
  • Experience developing materials for safety‑related topics, as covered by OSHA and other Federal, state, and local regulations.

The full salary range for this position is $51.88 per hour - $77.82 per hour.

Workplace Environment/Expectation

This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. City employees will have the option to work remotely two days a week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.
