Job summary

James Madison University School of Music seeks an outstanding artist-teacher for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Composition starting Fall 2027. The candidate should be a creative composer, collaborate across the School of Music and beyond, and be an engaging teacher across diverse courses.

The successful applicant will join a collegial faculty, maintain an active creative agenda, and contribute to studies in composition, theory, and related areas.

Qualifications

DMA or PhD in Composition with ABD candidates considered.
Proven record of creative activity as a composer (public performances, commissions, recordings, publications).
Evidence of effective teaching and experience teaching composition.
Experience teaching music theory or related courses.

Responsibilities

Coordinate composition instruction and co-lead the composition program at bachelor's and master's levels.
Engage in creative scholarship for tenure/promotion at a research university.
Teach courses related to composition (instrumentation, orchestration, counterpoint).
Teach theory and/or aural skills in undergraduate/graduate curricula.
Teach additional courses based on interests and specialization.
