Job summary

Eastern New Mexico University seeks tutors to provide individualized and small‑group academic support to adult education students. Under the Adult Education Director, you will help strengthen study skills, content knowledge, and confidence while collaborating with faculty, advisors, and the Student Achievement HUB.

Positions are temporary, part‑time, grant‑funded and hired each semester as needed. Evening and weekend hours may be required to support tutoring labs and sessions.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree required; bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Proven proficiency in the subject area to be tutored.
  • Experience tutoring or mentoring students, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Flexible hours, including evenings and/or Saturdays.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and small-group tutoring in assigned subject areas.

Position Overview

Position Summary

Tutor positions are temporary part-time grant-funded positions hired each semester on an as‑needed basis. Under the direction of the Adult Education Director, the Tutor provides individualized and small‑group academic support to students in assigned subject areas, helping students strengthen study skills, content knowledge, and confidence in their coursework. The Tutor works collaboratively with adult education, faculty, advisors, and the Student Achievement HUB to support student learning, retention, and completion.

Requirements
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide individual and small-group tutoring and teach students in assigned subject areas (e.g., math, writing, reading, or other courses as needed).
  • Help students strengthen study skills, time‑management strategies, and test‑taking techniques.
  • Review course syllabi, assignments, and instructor expectations to tailor tutoring sessions to individual student needs.
  • Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions, including student attendance and topics covered.
  • Communicate with faculty regarding student progress and areas of difficulty, as appropriate.
  • Assist students in using campus learning resources, including the Learning Commons, library, and online tutoring platforms.
  • Maintain a welcoming, patient, and encouraging environment that supports student confidence and independence.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources (advising, counseling, accommodation services, and financial aid) as needed.
  • Assist with staffing tutoring lab hours, workshops, or study sessions as scheduled.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records and interactions in compliance with FERPA.
  • Participate in training, orientation, and other institutional activities as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements
  • Associate's degree required; bachelor's degree preferred
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the subject area(s) to be tutored (e.g., math, writing, reading, or science).
  • Successful completion of the course(s) to be tutored with a grade of B or higher, or equivalent demonstrated competency.
  • Experience tutoring, teaching, or mentoring students, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with students from a diverse range of academic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and/or Saturdays, based on tutoring lab and scheduling needs.
Preferred
  • Prior tutoring or peer mentoring experience in a community college or higher education setting.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Experience working with adult learners or non-traditional students.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of subject matter in assigned tutoring area(s).
  • Ability to explain complex concepts clearly and in an accessible manner.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with FERPA and applicable professional standards.
  • Strong organizational skills to track student progress and manage multiple tutoring sessions.
  • Ability to build rapport and trust with students.
  • Patience, flexibility, and a genuine desire to help students succeed.
  • Basic computer literacy and ability to use tutoring software and online platforms.
  • Sound judgment and professionalism when interacting with students, faculty, and staff.
Working Conditions
Physical Demand and Working Conditions

Work is performed during normal work hours, with some evenings and weekends to meet deadlines. Work is sedentary in nature that at times requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a consistent amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
