Job description

Temporary Part-Time Studio Guitar Instructor

The Tell School of Music at Millersville University is seeking a part-time instructor to teach guitar students in the Music Industry, Music Education, and BA programs. The candidate must have experience with guitar techniques for jazz, classical, and current popular genres. The majority of guitar students are Music Industry majors focused on popular commercial music genres.

This temporary, part‑time studio instructor will teach individual half‑hour and hour‑long studio guitar lessons each week and lead a weekly hour‑long masterclass for guitar studio students. Responsibilities also include maintaining a proration of office hours (approximately 25 minutes per workload hour taught), teaching face‑to‑face and online as needed, recording and calculating grades, preparing course outlines and syllabi, developing lesson plans, selecting appropriate teaching aids, and engaging in service and scholarship commensurate with the assignment.

Required Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Music or BA degree in guitar performance with a minimum of 15 additional graduate credits in music.
Demonstrated knowledge of guitar commercial and classical pedagogy.
Ability to teach diverse student populations successfully.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Commitment to inclusive practices and working with diverse student populations.
Successful interview.
Successful teaching demonstration for studio guitar instruction.
Successful completion of three background checks.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD or ABD in Music.
Prior college‑level teaching experience at the undergraduate level.

Essential Functions

Teach studio guitar lessons and masterclasses face‑to‑face and online.
Prepare course outlines, syllabi, lesson plans, and teaching materials.
Use computer to email, research, prepare documents, grade, and submit final grades online.
Engage in the selection of appropriate textbooks and teaching aids.
Maintain office hours as required (minimum 25 minutes per workload hour).
Assist with teaching and service activities as requested by the department.
Lift/pull/push up to 10 pounds, as required.
Perform any other reasonable duties within the faculty member’s field of competence.
