Job summary

Smile Train in New York is seeking a Temporary Junior Accountant to support our global finance team during an ERP conversion. You will maintain clean financial records, run essential reports, and help with data quality control, while gaining practical experience in nonprofit finance and system implementation.

This 9-month assignment (Sept 2026–April 2027) offers 35 hours per week, a hybrid schedule at our Midtown Manhattan office, and a range of benefits.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related quantitative field.
  • 0–2 years of relevant accounting experience, ideally from internships or entry-level roles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables, complex formulas).
  • Base understanding of accrual accounting and internal controls.

Responsibilities

  • Enter, code, and track daily financial transactions and vendor invoices in the accounting system.
  • Process corporate credit card statements and accounts payable items.
  • Assist in vendor payments via ACH and wire transfers.
  • Support month-end close, reconciliations, and related schedules.

As Smile Train’s Temporary Junior Accountant, you will play a critical hands-on role in supporting our global finance team during an exciting system-wide ERP conversion. Working alongside our finance staff, you will help bridge the gap between accounting data and operational performance by maintaining clean financial records, running essential reports, and assisting with data quality control. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented accounting professional or recent graduate eager to gain practical experience in global non-profit finance and accounting, data analysis, and system implementation.

Key Responsibilities
General Accounting & Day-To-Day Operations
  • Enter, code, and track daily financial transactions and vendor invoices accurately within the accounting system.
  • Process corporate credit card statements, out-of-pocket employee expense reimbursements, and accounts payable (AP) items.
  • Assist in preparing and setting up vendor payments via ACH and wire transfers.
  • Organize and maintain digital filing systems for vendor records, banking details, and tax documentation.
ERP Conversion & Data Clean-Up Support
  • Assist with financial data entry, data cleaning, and record deduplication ahead of system migration.
  • Perform basic Quality Control (QC) checks on migrated financial data to ensure accuracy between legacy records and the new system.
  • Help cross-reference and verify general ledger (GL) entries, vendor list information, and historical transactions.
Month-End Close & Reconciliations
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations and routine general ledger reviews under supervision.
  • Assist with basic month-end schedules, including prepaid expenses, accrued expenses, fixed assets, and AP aging reports.
  • Review transactions against department budgets to ensure proper account and cost-center coding.
Administrative & Team Support
  • Provide administrative support to the finance team by gathering audit schedules and pulling supporting documentation.
  • Execute other administrative duties and special data-entry or reporting projects assigned by supervisors.
Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a self‑motivated, detail‑oriented, and analytical professional with strong organizational and communication skills. This role requires an eagerness to learn financial processes, clean and organize transactional data, and assist in running reports that translate numbers into clear insights for cross‑functional teams. A strong work ethic, high accuracy in data entry, and adaptability during system changes are key to success in this role.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related quantitative field.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • 0-2 years of relevant accounting experience, ideally from a related internship or entry‑level role.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables, Complex formulas).
  • Base understanding of accounting standards and accrual basis accounting concepts.
Compensation

$35/hour
