Job summary

NYLAG is hiring a Temporary Staff Attorney for 6 months to work on unemployment insurance cases. The attorney will review a docket, advise CAPU/ELP Directors, and represent clients on unemployment matters.

The role is in New York, with supervision by the Employment Law Project Director and the Community Access Programs Unit Director. Requires JD and NYS Bar, up to five years’ experience in employment law, and strong communication and analytical skills.

Qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school and NYS Bar admission are required.
• Up to five years of employment law experience preferred.
• Experience handling unemployment insurance cases is preferred.
• Demonstrated strong communication skills with clients and colleagues.
• Demonstrated strong analytical and organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
• Demonstrated ability to respond promptly to high-volume communications.
• Demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
• Committed to ethical and client-centered representation models.

Responsibilities

• Analyze a docket of approximately 150 unemployment cases to determine next steps.
• Provide direct representation, advice, and consultation on unemployment insurance law matters.
• Litigate a smaller docket of cases at the appeal level.
• Complete administrative duties including updating NYLAG case management records and coordinating case closing.
• Other duties as assigned.
