Position Duties

The Comptroller of Maryland's Compliance Division is seeking Temporary Call Center Representatives to assist taxpayers in our Collections Unit by answering and resolving telephone inquiries coming into our call center located in Annapolis.

In this entry‑level position the incumbent will perform tax assessments, collections, investigations, or examinations; perform duties independently as a member of an examination or collection team; and provide professional taxpayer service assistance. On the job training and resources are provided to give you the knowledge necessary to perform the job. Temporary positions can lead to more permanent opportunities.

Schedules are available for call center representatives Monday–Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Leave may be limited during certain times of the year due to high volume events, projects or special assignments. Employees are unable to prepare tax returns outside of the requirements of the job or work for private accounting services.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Experience: One year of experience involving one or more of the following areas: customer service, call center, fiscal clerical or clerical related work.
  • Note: Candidates may substitute 30 college credits from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
  • Note: Candidates may substitute one year of U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non‑commissioned officer in accounting and budget classification or accounting and budget specialty codes in the financial clerical and technician field of work for the required experience.
  • For education obtained outside of the U.S., you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service. If you possess a degree obtained outside of the United States, please submit a detailed, course‑by‑course evaluation report from one of the U.S. equivalency evaluating members identified at http://www.naces.org/members.html.
Selection Process

Applicants must provide sufficient information on their application to demonstrate that they meet the qualifications. Approved applications will be based on a review of the information submitted. All qualified applicants are placed on an unranked list of candidates and will remain active on this list for at least one year. Incomplete information may result in disqualification. All information concerning your qualifications must be submitted by the closing date. Upon appointment, new hires and/or transfers must successfully undergo fingerprinting. Disqualifying charges may include any felony; any crime of moral turpitude, e.g. embezzlement, fraud, tax evasion or bribery; any crime of identity theft or impersonation; any crime of assault or battery; and any crime relating to the use or distribution of a controlled dangerous substance other than marijuana, regardless of the age of the offense or the specifications of the position.
