Job summary

Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton seeks a Temporary 8th Grade Algebra Teacher Long Term Substitute to deliver CPM-aligned algebra instruction for 8th graders at our P-8 campus. This role emphasizes curriculum development, student assessment, and engagement in a Catholic independent school setting.

The ideal candidate has a BA in a relevant field with teaching experience in middle school, preferably in a Catholic school, and shows a commitment to inclusive education and collaboration with colleagues

Position Title: Temporary 8th Grade Algebra Teacher Long Term Substitute

Department: P-8

Reports To: Principal of P-8

FLSA Classification: Exempt

FTE (Full-Time Equivalent): 100%

Schedule of Duties: Temporary (September 2026 to December 18, 2026)

Salary: $82,000- $170,000 annual/salary depending upon level of education and experience

Position Purpose: The 8th Grade Mathematics Teacher prepares curriculum and teaches Algebra at the middle school level

Specific Expectations for P-8 Employees: In addition to regular teaching responsibilities—such as curriculum planning, class preparation, grade reporting, report card narratives, parent-teacher conferences, supervision duties, classroom substitution, advisory, elective teaching, office hours, and participation in class trips and retreats—P-8 faculty and staff are expected to contribute to the broader school community and support program growth and service opportunities. This includes building a strong sense of community for students, promoting a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement, engaging in professional development and training opportunities, and attending required meetings and events, such as Director’s Days, Open Houses, accreditation meetings, and class overnight trips, as directed by your supervisor.

Essential Functions

• Teaches Algebra successfully to 8th-grade middle school students, using the CPM curriculum.
• Prepares course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and student resources.
• Maintains accurate student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
• Evaluates student work and provides meaningful feedback to guide learning / growth.
• Plans, evaluates, and revises curricula, course content, course materials, and methods of instruction.
• Uses effective class management techniques to ensure effective learning.
• Collaborates with colleagues to develop and renew curriculum and other school programs, including contributing positively to a team that co-creates shared curriculum and assessments across sections of a course.
• Contributes actively to build a vibrant faculty/staff learning culture.
• Maintains regularly scheduled office hours in order to advise and assist students.
• Maintains expertise in subject matter and pedagogy through professional development.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• BA degree in a relevant field and three years of relevant teaching experience. Prior experience working in an independent/Catholic school environment and/or Master’s degree in a relevant field and /or teaching credential in appropriate subject matter strongly preferred.
• Experience with CPM curriculum, preferred.
• Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion.
• Demonstrated ability to teach middle school-level course(s) in at least one other discipline within their subject area.
• Demonstrated ability to teach adolescents with joy and verve.
• A strong understanding of and commitment to pedagogy aligned with the National Council of Teachers in their subject matter.
• Demonstrated ability to integrate innovative technology to support student learning.
• Demonstrated ability to support all learners, including those with an identified learning difference or disability.
• Obvious passion for their subject area and fostering that passion in adolescents.
• Willingness to adapt to an existing curriculum as well as contribute ideas to enhance the respective academic and other school programs.
• Fluency in reading, writing and speaking in English, as well as outstanding interpersonal skills; additional skills in Spanish are valued and preferred.
• A clear commitment to the educational philosophy of the school as articulated in the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools and professional behavior based on it.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

• Works in an often highly stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
• Demonstrated excellent attendance and punctuality.
• May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
• Work primarily in a traditional climate controlled classroom environment and intermittently in outside weather conditions, including heat and cold typical to the Mid-Peninsula in the Bay Area.
• Be able to occasionally lift up to 40 lbs. and regularly travel safely and comfortably over a 63 acre campus
• Available and willing to attend and work some evenings/weekends and on occasional overnight trips.
• Abide by school’s current safety policies (ex: wearing masks, washing hands, etc.)
